The Curious Case of the Kindly Unsolicited Email & Cutepet’s Art Reposting Policy.

Some days I enter the spare bedroom that serves as my art studio, sit down, and hammer out the hentai for 14 solid hours. Other days I get entangled in business concerns, life concerns, or technical concerns. Sometimes bills need paying, packages need to be run down to the post office, or a monitor needs replacing. Sometimes I need to respond to commission client emails, or update my webpage. And sometimes I receive an email like this.

“Someone mentioned you aren't fond of your art being posted off of your site without your permission. Your request to Danbooru confirms that. However, a few people have been posting your art at Gelbooru. If you want it removed, it's best that you contact the Admin directly.

[Link to artwork]”

I appreciate these emails, because the people who send me these notes are trying to be helpful. They’re the keepers of long dead Netiquette doctrine. These people know about me, and care about my artwork. They know my wishes as a creator of hardcore hentai on the web, and how much I disdain my work being reposted. They tip me off because they’ve seen a net crime committed, and as a witness, they feel morally obligated to file a report. So, with no tangible reward, they take the time to send me a note. I love these people. They’re the Heroes of the Web.

The problem is these emails then require action on my part. They involve hunting down info, finding points of contact, compiling lists, and sending of emails to admins, begging them to please please remove [http links] from their user posted archive. This is the unglamorous secretarial part of being a hentai artist. (Note: There is no glamorous part.) It’s the behind the scenes bullshit of existing on the web and trying to manage what people do with my output. And quite frankly, like me, it’s getting old.

The Problem with Boorus.
From my standpoint, the problem with Booru sites is that pictures tend to amass. Images are uploaded, tagged, and indexed. Before you know it, 200 people have (in aggregate) uploaded my entire webpage. That's why I've had to resort to DO NOT POST proclamations. It's the most efficient method of keeping an amorphous Booru from becoming a publicly distributed shadow of my website. Admittedly, DNPs are an unwieldy cudgel. I don't mind the occasional picture post from a fan wanting to share a favorite Cutepet picture, but once all my work is publically posted, it really disincentivizes the idea of membership to my website. Obviously, I'm still here making new works every week, and relying on subscribers to fund the creation of new high-quality hentai art, but I imagine that memberships to Cutepet (and the affiliated sites Jigglygirls, HentaiTNA, etc.) become a lot less special for subscribers when everything's been picked through, pulled out, and reposted on the open web. So I ask, "What to do, Booru? What to do?" For now the only answer I arrive at is, “Do not post.” (There’s an implied, “Please” at the end.)

Torrenting is Ass Raping the Ones You Love - Only do it if the Recipient is Dead, Doesn't Care, Can't be Hurt, or You Want to Hurt Them.
My beef with sharing is when it passes into the realm of wholesale piracy. I don't get upset when people post a couple of pics. I do get upset when people dump the entire contents of my site up on the web, or seed a torrent with a full site rip. I realize the only reason people would bother torrenting my work is because they like what Studio Cutepet is producing. But it's more like a slap in the face than a "thank you" when I see these torrent files. If you're seeding or downloading a torrent with my work, you know what you're doing. Don't piss in my face and call it social sharing.

The Web is a Chaotic-Good Teenager - It's Naughty, and Confused, but has a Conscious
Although the Boorus, and image boards have diverse populations, made up of all the scum and villainy of the cognizant cosmos, they also exhibit remarkable restrain and self control. I think it's because in the aggregate, the people using these sites (and running them) are reasonable, agreeable, mostly law abiding, and out to enjoy life (i.e. they're human beings). And while I wouldn't trust the average Danbooru power poster with my daughter's virginity, I might trust them to watch my laptop in Starbucks while I run to take a piss. So, that said, I trust in the aggregate anonymous masses. Anonymous (in its many forms) has shown restraint, the ability to self regulate, and in general, to not be an unwarranted prick. I applaud 4-Chan and the Booru users for respecting Cutepet's anti-sharing policies for all these years. When someone starts dumping my oeuvre on Gelbooru, someone else always marks the works for deletion. I can say this for a fact because I see it happening all the time.

I Hate Bitching. I Like Making Artwork.
Kind people the world over tip me off to the fact that this-or-that picture is posted on this-or-that website. I follow the links and see galleries full of reposted Cutepet pics. Then, I have to take action. I hate bitching. I hate writing this. I could be writing a short ero fic about adorable creatures fucking a voluptuous blonde's every orifice. Better yet, I could be drawing said pic. Instead, I'm wasting my time having to file reports with the internet police for petty theft. It's way past old. I do it because I care. I care, because if I ignore the theft, it gets out of hand, and people start thinking it's acceptable. So I file my reports, and the sites take down the pictures, and people bitch and moan, and then someone reposts the pic and the cycle repeats. It's like killing cockroaches. The only way the problem ultimately goes away is to burn down the house. Because I can't burn the house (and don't want to), I resort to killing roaches with my shoe whenever I see one crop up. It's inefficient and pointless, but to ignore the roach is to accept the roach. So I kill because it's my moral obligation.

Here's my New Cutepet Policy on Image Posting (Updated for Y2k+12 Compliance)
If I make a picture freely public, either on Hentai Foundry, Deviant Art, Twitter or elsewhere, then I don't mind people sharing it. Feel free to share it and comment on it in whatever forum you choose—be it on 4-chan, Danbooru, Gelbooru, Futanari Paradise, blogs, Tumblr, etc. I'm glad you like the work, and appreciate the exposure. If you're trying to profit from my work, get in contact with me. Either we’ll work something out, or we won't.

(I might also add, don't edit the art or crop the image tags. Doing so isn't in the spirit of sharing. That's about being a dick, and presenting yourself as the point of origin.)

Hopefully, this new doctrine will let people comfortably share Cutepet pics wherever on the web without worrying about being banned from boards, or having Cutepet sue them (for the record, I've never had to sue anyone, for any reason).

If I don't make the work public, please be respectful about posting. If you have a fair-use reason for reposting it, then we're cool. If you just want to show a couple of pics, we're cool. If you're trying to earn points on g-e.hentai by dumping everything I've ever produced into a gallery… well, you suck. I don't approve.

I'm Not a Greedy Shithole
I'm often characterized online as a greedy shithole because:
1. Adult art is my source of revenue (as well as my passion).
2. I request people remove my pictures from websites that consist entirely of stolen artwork.

(On point two, please understand that 99% of all Japanese artists (who account for 99% of all lifted hentai artwork) would also ask places like Danbooru to remove their dojin, collected pixiv pics, or art book materials, if they knew about these sites, understood the language, or felt that allowing the works to stay posted would impact their bottom-line income. But there are literally and figuratively barriers as deep and wide as the Pacific Ocean between artists like Tony Taka, and 10,000,000 sites freely distributing his art books. I'm sure if he could push a button, he'd make those sites go away. But it's so difficult, time consuming, and pointless trying to police the internet. Better to keep your head down, not worry about how gaijin (not their audience) steal their work. It's better to keep focused on your day job of making slender and curvaceous soft-shaded character designs for SEGA properties. That's where the primary paycheck comes from. Well, that and the dojin buyers at Comiket.)

As an American making hentai art, I sell to a small crowd of H savvy art aficionados. People who like the Cutepet blend of hentai art, and are willing to support me and my fellow artists so we can make more of it. Personally, I think this is a good thing. I think showing support with a financial contribution, to an artist or particular subject matter, is a great model for doing business. It might even be capitalism.

Over the last year, I've seen my subscriber number slow tick up, which is great. Right now the income from Cutepet allows me to pay the rent, and eat far too much low-quality food. It also frees me up to function full-time as an artist devoted to a niche topic--makin' hentai art. As time goes on and the subscriber numbers increase, it'll allow me to hire on more artists whose work I feel signifies the best in H art. In the off chance that things snowball, I can hire even more people, with the end goal of turning Cutepet into a full scale domestic H-art production house. Who knows, dumber things have happened. Why shouldn't Americans try to make (competent or even great) hentai art? As a nation, we like porn, and we kinda like anime. I think we have the talent pool. We just need to support it for long enough to take root and become self-sustaining. That's part of what I'm trying to accomplish with Cutepet. I want the brand to signify the best in Western hentai art.

In Closing
As an artist, I'm flailing at the world with a Wacom pen, trying to make "something" beautiful. You can hate me, ignore me, or help me out. Whatever the case, I'm going to try not to concern myself with the Boorus and the Chans of the world from here on out. You guys know my policy. Basically, all I ask is that you not be dicks to me and my fellow artists. There are far too many evil people and organizations in need of an ass raping. Cutepet isn't one of them. (Our asses are small, soft, and very delicate.)

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the matter. It's time for me to put my head down, not worry about the web, and focus on what I do best-- making fictional characters cum for people like you. ;)

How Cutepet art happens - Molly Mauler Pin-up

Character Design Pin-up featuring Molly Mauler

Start with a basic concept: "New Foxy Fighter character. Scene girl mixed with dominatrix. Real mean. Small boobs. Skinny."

Warm-up by drawing a series of thumbnail sized gesture sketches. It's all about feeling out an expressive pose.

Focus the pose(s), making notes on the sketch and elsewhere to help solidify the idea for the character.

Design the character's signature outfit. Try multiple ideas, then pick the best elements and try them together.

Combine pose, character, attitude, & costume into a sketch with a strong silhouette, that clearly conveys the design.

Refine lines with ink. Color & add effects. Then crop the image, cover nips, and publicly post the art as a sample. ;)

Samus Hardcore Suit

Just wanted to share this Samus drawing while I'm sketching away at the next big picture for Cutepet. Sketches like this often help me to feel out a character before drawing them in a more elaborate image.

Since Samus's design also has several variations, it also helped to pin-down one specific look. While creating this sketch, I ended up cobbling together my favorite aspects from her various designs, making this version of Samus a sort of 'Cutepet exclusive'.

Body Proportions Survey

Last week we ran our first ever survey within the Members section of Cutepet.org. I wanted to gather some actual numbers for what Cutepet members prefer when it comes to the female form.

The survey concerned body proportion, an important indicator of physical maturity. In a nutshell, characters with a higher head-to-body ratio look more mature, and graceful. Characters with a lower head-to-body ratio look more youthful, and cute. For the survey, I created five nondescript bodies, whose proportions ranged from 7.5HH to 5HH. This is the middle range area that most figures fall into.

To better explain what I mean about proportions, I've prepared a sheet with some examples. I also defined the body proportions of the silhouettes used in the survey. In the Proportions survey, I didn't provide any formal numbers for the characters' proportions. Respondents simply rated the bodies on two unlabeled charts based on their gut feelings.

Some people state head-to-body proportion as a ratio, like 1:9. I like to indicate the total number of heads high a character is, like 9HH.

After a little over a week of polling, I took the data and gave each response a point value from 1-5, (5 points for most desirable, 1 point for undesirable) and set about scoring the silhouettes.

The results for the first chart showed that the silhouette with the Womanly proportions was the favorite. Interestingly, the silhouette with the Model proportions scored dramatically worse than the Womanly, Youthful, or Moé proportions. It seems hentai fans like their women looking mature, but still more on the cute side. Long, willowy characters don't do it for you guys. Likewise, the Adorable Mascot proportioned character scored right at the bottom. Only one respondent was even mildly aroused by this body type, and most found it totally undesirable.

For the second set, I scaled all the silhouettes to the same size, but kept the head-to-body proportions the same. This way, the characters with smaller head-to-body ratios wouldn't look as childlike, and the characters with a larger head-to-body ratio would look a bit more youthful. Sure enough, the poll results showed a less dramatic point spread between silhouettes. Even the Adorable Mascot proportioned silhouette scored higher in the second set, though it was still at the bottom of the list.

On the second chart, the most desired body was the one with the youthful proportions, as opposed to the silhouette with womanly proportions, though the numbers were so close it was practically a draw (56-points youthful / 53-points womanly).

Here's the combined data for the two-part survey:
Womanly (7HH) = 122 points
Youthful (6.5HH) = 120 points
Moé (6HH) = 98 points
Model (7.5HH) = 92 points
Adorable (5HH) = 64 points

Overall what the survey told me is that despite the Japanese affinity for moé characters with adolescent proportions, by far, western hentai fans (who subscribe to Cutepet) like their characters cute but mature looking, with roughly the same proportions as adult women. I know this shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's something I've been wondering about for a while.

Answering questions about Cutepet turning members-only

The following is in response to an e-mail I received from a fan (name withheld to respect his privacy). As he brings up some points that I'm sure other people are wondering about as well, I decided to share my response here on the blog. His comments are in blue.

I can remember years ago when I first happened upon this site. If memory serves me I believe it was a picture depicting Zelda and Link making love in a rather...."interesting" fashion. From that moment on, I was hooked. To me it was more then just "Porn", it had a particular style and feel...That "jen es se qua" that most other erotic art, especially western art was lacking, I found here at this site.

It's always good to hear from a longtime fan. I'll do my best to address your areas of concern and explain our position on them.

"What an interesting business model" I thought, "they do the some pictures for free and work on tips...making up the difference with special orders and commissions.". A business model that is now becoming even more popular with the times. Which is why...this change confuses me... why would anyone change a business model that was perfectly suited for such an economic environment?

If the commissions and donations business model worked for us, we wouldn't have changed it.

Let's say a commission image costs $300. If a high quality image takes 40 hours to produce, that comes out to only $7.50 an hour. I may as well be working at McDonald's. At the same time, $300 is understandably a lot to ask out of an individual. To make an income that actually pays the bills, I would have to raise my commission prices even higher, but they are already at a point that is beyond most people's means.

Now look at the members-site business model. For $19.99, an individual gets access to weekly picture updates, plus our ten year catalog of art and comics. That's already a better value than a single image for $300. Plus, we hold weekly polls to allow our members to guide the direction of the new content. Basically, the members-site format splits the cost of image creation among an entire community. It allows individuals to be a patron of our artistic endeavors in a way that doesn't break anyone's wallet.

Further more, taking the names of the real artists off the art...Or was this a take over?? Even the Web-blog has gone derelict... ______________*, predominant Voice actor, prefers not to talk about her Hentai days, but she still at least acknowledges them...

No, this is not a takeover. We're still the same two artists who have always updated and created the artwork on Cutepet.

That's really interesting about ________. I didn't know she used to do hentai voice acting. Funny though - I browsed around her website and wiki and couldn't find any reference whatsoever to any sort of adult roles. She may acknowledge her "hentai days" if her fans ask (if someone asks me, I do, too), but I doubt she flaunts it, because it could very well cause her to lose a job. I'll tell you why. Unfortunately, like it or not, porn is NOT favorably viewed upon by everyone. Some employers do not want to hire an artist who has worked on adult content (they honestly fear that the artist might sneak some sex into an assignment, or something 9_9). I can tell you for a fact that an artist can be both interested in creating hentai works and general audience works, just as you probably appreciate both hentai art and general art. Unfortunately, that is difficult for some people to understand, which is why pennames are necessary.

As for not maintaining the web blog, our new site format allows me to offer the same amount of in-depth coverage on our artwork that I was previously doing on the blog. If you enjoyed the work-in-progress imagery on the blog, then you'll love what we've been doing with the new images on the member's site.

Art cannot thrive in a scenario where money is the primary motivation, since money does not do much for inspiration.

Do you feel that way about all professional artists, musicians, writers, etc? I suppose you have this picture in your head of the starving artist who suffers for their artwork, and has to work a job on the side that isn't art-related so that their art remains "pure"? It IS possible for professional artists to be both passionate about their work, and be paid for it. Money does not taint artwork - it allows me to focus on creating good pictures instead of worrying about how I'm going to afford food and a roof over my head. And believe me, if I wasn't passionate about art, I would have quit this profession a long time ago. There's a lot of other far easier and more lucrative ways out there to make a living.

Furthermore, the members-site model allows me to be more artistically free than ever before. Every picture I now create consists of my own unique ideas (guided by member feedback, of course), as opposed to the ideas dictated by a commission client. Plus, knowing that people are paying for my work drives me to continuously push what I'm capable of doing.

P.S. You may want to flog whom ever wrote/approved the "info" section on the main page... For one, it's got grammar issues galore.

As I mentioned earlier, everything on the website is written and created by us, info section blurb included. I proofread everything, but I know I'm not perfect. I would very much appreciate it if you could be kind enough to point out to me those grammatical issues so that I may fix them.

Secondly, its kinda sexist..."box of tissues" implies male masturbation...do you really think only men enjoy this sort of art?? Bad form...

That was more of a tongue-in-cheek comment than anything. On the topic though, as a woman, I'd love for there to be more women who enjoy this sort of artwork, but honestly, a large majority of our fan base is indeed male--that's not sexist, just a fact.

Kingdom Hearts' Xion WIP

Here is the work up for the Kingdom Hearts' Xion image, from character design to final illustration.

The process starts with a character design turnaround. In the case of fanart, the character design stage is less about designing the character (since she is already designed), and more about "feeling out" the design details in my style. Xion wears a figure-obscuring long coat, so determining her physique was another aspect of the process.

Next, I came up with a rough idea for the pose.

Once I was satisfied with the composition and pose, I set about drawing it. Here you can see the clean pencils, ready for inking.

Then I prepared the general lighting, color scheme and background.

After that, it was matter of inking and coloring the character. Check out the finished image on Cutepet!

Ryougi Shiki WIP 2

Here's some more workups and sketches from the Ryougi Shiki picture:

Here you can see how I refined the rough sketches and concepts along the top into the final three picture candidates I posted in the last WIP post. Of the three concepts, I ended up going with image concept #2, which further refined into the bottom three sketches you see in this picture.

To really nail the anatomy, I took my favorite version of the sketch, and started breaking down the perspective:

Perspective isn't just for backgrounds. The character also conforms to the vanishing points. If you look closely at the top image, you can see where her body used to be, and how it was reworked to follow the perspective.

Working from the bottom blue sketch, next I did a final clean pencil drawing, and then finished it with the inks and color. A lot of love and time goes into each of our images, as I hope these WIP show. :)

Ryougi Shiki WIP

New picture in the works... this is Ryougi Shiki from an anime series called Kara no Kyoukai.

When working out a new picture, I'll sometimes come up with multiple rough composition sketches. That allows me to try out different variations on a pose/camera angle, and see what works best. Stay tuned to find out which one I end up using.... :)

Sci-fi Amelia WIP

This is a commission I'm working on of original sci-fi character Amelia. She's taking a break from her navigational duties to toy herself with a remote control operated device. A hidden feature of the ship. *grin* :D

Here's the character design sketch of Amelia modeling the naughty-hide-nothing sci-fi outfit she'll be wearing in the picture (She can speak in binary, hence the binary barcode word balloon):

Angelissa - Pegasus Transformation

This one was a huge undertaking that we've been working on since last month. A triptych piece of Angelissa transforming into a pegasus. That's three figures, and six pairs of wings. The file size on the final version containing all three parts is massive.

Angelissa pops up in a lot of our pictures--in fact, we've been "playing" with her since 2001--but she's not a Cutepet original character. This this four-winged beauty was created by Angel, whose website can be found here. Thanks, Angel, for all the commissions over the years. We love Angelissa. :)

Rukia and Kagura - WIP

Here's a sneak peek at a new image I'm working on featuring Rukia Kuchiki from Bleach and Kagura from Azumanga Daioh, for an individual who loves both characters. :)

Doing design sketches of the characters allows me to feel out their anatomy. Every character is different, and I don't just mean the size of their breasts. =p Some artists fall back on the same curvy body type every time, but I find that to be a little bit boring. In the case of these two, Kagura is a very athletic and sporty character, with thicker proportions that Rukia, so I wanted to make sure that came across in the picture. (Note also how they compare to the taller, fashion-model-proportioned woman from the "Sunlit Veranda" image.)

Once I felt I understood Rukia and Kagura's individual characteristics, I worked up the composition for the picture. The concept is Rukia is touching herself while she watches Kagura having sex with some guy. Who the guy is....who knows. Perhaps it's you, the viewer. :D

Sunlit Veranda - Complete

Sunlit Veranda started with this sketch supplied by the client (posted here with his permission). He wanted me to take the general idea presented in the sketch and, in a word, "Cutepetify" it. :)

The first step after that was to work out the look of the woman in my style while still capturing the essence of the woman from the client's sketch. Using charcoal pencil on newsprint, I did a number of character design sketches, shown here.

Once that was done, I worked out the general composition and final character design which you can see in this earlier blog post.

Then I colored in the background, which you can see the step-by-step process for below.

I generally save coloring the character for last. (If you think of the background art as the "veggies", the necessary nutritious parts of the picture, then the character is the "dessert", the tasty treat at the end.) :)

I was going through the old image archives, and found this picture of our Kiran character from 2002. For what ever reason, she was only briefly posted on Cutepet. I'm not sure why the image wasn't on the website long... maybe it got lost in the shuffle when we were redoing the web design. In any case, it's still a charming pic of our witch lady, so I thought I would share it on the blog (it's also been added to 2002 gallery on Cutepet where it belongs). Enjoy! :)

Angelissa on a Cloud WIP

There's a new picture in the works of our favorite four-winged angel, Angelissa! Right now she is completely penciled and awaiting inks and color.

Here's a look at the progress so far:

Every picture starts with an idea. This rough thumbnail shows the general composition of Angelissa leaning back on a cloud while touching herself.

The idea was further refined into a slightly larger drawing This one is ballpoint pen with blue pencil for wings.

The final pencil art was done on 11"x 14" bristol in graphite and blue pencil. Her négligée will be drawn on another layer.

Elly and KOS MOS

Here's the newest picture I just finished up, some yuri action between Xenogear's Elly and Xenosaga's KOS MOS. Enjoy~

So I thought everyone would enjoy hearing a little bit about the creation process that every picture goes through.

The first step is coming up with the concept, which in this case entailed both coming up with a creative way of drawing the girl's outfits while exposing their naughty bits, and thinking up an exciting composition and poses. Each of these sketches are no larger than a inch or two in size so I can create them quickly.

Once I've settled with an idea, I create a rough sketch and work out the anatomy, the pose, and the background in a larger size. I typically drawn standard 8.5"x11" printer paper at this stage.

Once I'm satisfied, this sketch is enlarged to the full 11"x14" size for a final, clean pencil pass on higher quality paper.

Next, this drawing is scanned into the computer and inked in Painter (This step was skipped in the recent Chrono Trigger picture I did of Marle and Lucca to give the piece a softer, sweeter touch).

Finally, the background and characters are colored in Photoshop. That's the whole process! :)

In 2002, I was commissioned to do this mermaid picture after the client saw my Pisces mermaid picture. One of the specific requirements for this picture was that the mermaid should have a fish tail that cut around her pubic area in a "V" shape. How does one make love to a mermaid? Maybe this is how! When I drew Pisces, I put the opening in the back. It was interesting to try a different take on the subject.

Welcome to the new Cutepet blog! In this space in the upcoming months, we'll be showcasing pictures from the archive as well as new works, including work in progress sketches and creator commentary.

I don't have any new pictures to share right now, but I've been slowly going back through the archives and resaving the pictures in a larger format so the details can more easily enjoyed.
